Amazing food, spirited sports, and astounding sights — what's not to love about Wisconsin? If you're looking to get away without leaving the Badger State or having to fill your gas tank, you're in luck. We have some marvelous options that are perfect for designing your own epic summer road trip. There are tons of choices, so get in the car, add friends, family, and fun, and you're good to go.

Sun and Sand in Door County
If you're looking for a coastal getaway, look no further than the cool communities of the "Cape Cod of the Midwest." Around 150 miles from Milwaukee and 250 miles from Eau Claire, Door County is an ideal location for your summer travel. In addition to roughly 300 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan, you'll have plenty more to do. From the caves in Cave Point County Park and galleries in Fish Creek and Egg Harbor to the beaches, museums, and golfing on Washington Island, there's never a dull moment.

Splash Down in Wisconsin Dells
They don't call it "the Waterpark Capital of the World" for nothing. Channel your inner kid with a trip to this fun-filled destination around 50 miles from Madison, where you have plenty of indoor and outdoor park options. You can also choose from old-fashioned amusement parks, adventure parks, state parks, and exciting tours like the Wisconsin Ducks, which take you from land to the Wisconsin River in true Dells style.

Take the Scenic Route
Any time of year is a good time to hit the Wisconsin Great River Road. It stretches for 250 miles along the mighty Mississippi River, and is arguably one of the most stunning roadways in the entire region. Along the way you can explore river towns including Stockholm (known for its shopping) and Prairie du Chien (where you can experience history at Villa Louis), or check out the wildlife at nearby Wyalusing State Park. You'll also find tons of good eats, wineries, and shopping during your trip.

Milwaukee to Madison
From the museums and parks of Milwaukee to the amazing foodie destinations in the bustling college scene of Madison, it would be easy to think the bookends of this 80-mile journey are the highlights. But there are some pretty cool things to see along the way, as well:

  • The kids will love making a stop at the Concord Zoo in Jefferson County.
  • Adventurers swoon at the sight of glaciers and hiking trails of Kettle Moraine State Forest and Lapham Peak in Waukesha .County
  • Architecture buffs consider the Gobbler Theater in Johnson Creek a must-visit stop along the way.
  • Learn more about mustard than you ever thought possible at the National Mustard Museum near Madison.
